SDSC’s Data Science Roundtable with Dr. Jeffrey Lin – board-certified gynecologist in Washington, D.C. with more than 35 years of surgical experience, and our new OB/GYN clinical advisor – shared a clinician’s perspective on how data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and surgical video analysis can transform gynecologic surgery and training.

Dr. Lin provided an overview of the scope and complexity of gynecologic surgery, spanning benign conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic floor disorders, ovarian cysts, and gynecologic cancers. He discussed the full range of surgical approaches, including open surgery, traditional laparoscopy, robotic surgery, vaginal surgery, and emerging techniques using natural orifices. He highlighted when minimally invasive methods offer clear benefits, but also where some limitations remain.

A key focus of the talk was the potential of surgical video platforms and AI-driven analytics to transform the education, quality, and outcomes of gynecologic procedures. Video analysis could support resident training, provide objective feedback for early-career surgeons, assist with credentialing and certification, and uncover opportunities to improve surgical efficiency and safety – highly experienced surgeons included. Dr. Lin also emphasized the possibility of integrating video data with imaging, biomarkers, and other clinical inputs to enhance preoperative planning.

Finally, Dr. Lin addressed key challenges unique to gynecologic surgery, including wide anatomic variation, dynamic camera perspectives, differences in surgeon training and skill, and cultural and adoption barriers. His insights underscored the importance of grounding AI innovation in real-world surgical practice to meaningfully advance women’s health.
